Nothing packs a punch quite like the gas bills, particularly those very chilly Melbourne nights when the gas heater is a must! But what other choice do we have? Turn the heaters off and freeze? Not quite!
Here are a few simple things you can do to help you save on gas bills, why not try a few of these out yourself and see the difference it makes.
Start wearing socks
A lot of the time when the winter weather isn’t too cold you can avoid cranking up the heat by simply putting on a few extra items of clothing. The quickest way to warm your body up is to wear socks, if your feet are cold, your whole body will feel cold so cover those up first!
If you’re still feeling cold put on your favourite jumper or curl up on the couch with a cable knit throw if you’re having a TV night in.
Close empty rooms
This one is easily forgotten, but if you have got the gas heater on then make the habit of closing unoccupied rooms that are isolated from the rest of the house, this allows the current room you are in to heat up much faster, so once you have reached an ideal temperature then you can turn the gas ducted heater off entirely.
You’ll be surprised how long the heat stays within the room without you having to turn the heater on again, which allows you to save on gas bills.
Block the gaps
If combined, small gaps surrounding the windows and doors around a room can let out a significant amount of your heat out, even with the gas heater on it can save up to 10% of your gas heating bill.
A quick way to find these gaps is on the next windy day light a small candle and walk around with the flame near windows and doors and look for smoke moving in a horizontal direction. Once you’ve spotted the change in the flame then you’ve come across an air leak!
There are a few simple cheap things available to buy that can fix these leaks, including door sweeps to close spaces under exterior doors and caulk to block drafty areas near window frames.
Arrange a checkup
Proper ducted heating service and maintenance is just as important as any other steps to save money on gas bills. It is a good idea to get your gas heater checked out at least once a year to make sure it is running efficiently.
